đź“– Why Storytelling Matters During the Holidays

Stories go beyond fundraising—they create emotional connections and inspire action. The holidays are a time of heightened emotion, making it the perfect opportunity to connect with supporters through impactful narratives.

A strong story is:

Relatable: It highlights real people and experiences.

Emotional: It inspires generosity through empathy.

Actionable: It shows donors how they can be part of the impact.

đź’ˇBest Practices for Storytelling

1. Focus on One Person or Experience
Personal stories are more compelling than broad overviews.
Example: "Meet Sarah, a mother of three who received help through your generosity."

2. Be Specific and Concrete
Use details to make your stories memorable.
Example: Instead of "We provided meals," say, "Your support provided 1,000 warm meals last week."

3. Create a Clear Narrative Arc

The Protagonist: Who is the story about?

The Challenge: What obstacles were faced?

The Resolution: How did your organization and donors help?

The Call to Action: What can supporters do next?

4. Evoke Emotion While Staying Authentic
Highlight genuine, heartfelt moments without exaggerating.

5. Use Visuals
Enhance your stories with photos or videos of the people featured.

đź”— Connecting Stories Across the Holiday Season

Your holiday campaigns don’t have to stand alone. By weaving them into a cohesive story arc, you can create a stronger narrative that keeps supporters engaged:

Thanksgiving: Share stories of gratitude to celebrate the impact donors have already made.
Example: "This year, your support helped us serve 1,000 families in need. Meet Maria, one of the lives you’ve changed…"

Giving Tuesday: Highlight urgency and immediate needs within the broader story.
Example: "This Giving Tuesday, help us reach our goal of raising $50,000 to serve more families like Maria’s."

Mid-Season Updates: Provide updates and new stories to sustain engagement.
Example: "Thanks to your generosity, we’ve reached 70% of our goal! Here’s how your support is already making an impact."

Year-End: Reflect on the collective impact and inspire final contributions.
Example: "Together, we’ve raised $45,000 this season—enough to provide meals for 450 families. Let’s finish strong!"

📊 Using Data to Strengthen Your Storytelling

Data can add credibility and scale to your stories.

1. Pair Numbers with Faces
Combine statistics with personal stories to bring your impact to life.
Example: "Your support helped us serve 500 meals—meals that changed lives like Sarah’s."

2. Highlight Outcomes Over Outputs
Focus on how your work improves lives, not just how much you’ve done.
Example: "We didn’t just serve meals; we helped families regain stability."

3. Track and Share Progress
Show donors the progress you’re making toward goals to build urgency.
Example: "We’re 70% of the way to reaching our Giving Tuesday goal!"
